Every January 23rd, we celebrate Ed Roberts Day to honor the life and legacy of a man who transformed the disability rights movement. Known as the “Father of Independent Living,” Ed Roberts was a trailblazer who dedicated his life to advocating for accessibility, equality, and the empowerment of individuals with disabilities.
Roberts, who contracted polio at the age of 14, faced significant barriers throughout his life. Despite being denied admission to the University of California, Berkeley due to his disability, he fought back and became the first wheelchair user to attend the university. His determination paved the way for the establishment of the Independent Living Movement, which continues to empower people with disabilities to live with dignity and autonomy.
Ed Roberts Day is not just a celebration of one man’s achievements — it’s a reminder of the ongoing fight for inclusion and accessibility. At NNCIL, we’re inspired by his vision and remain committed to creating a community where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.
Let’s honor Ed Roberts by continuing to advocate for change, breaking down barriers, and building a more inclusive world. Together, we can carry his legacy forward.
