Sometimes the best approach to an emergency is to take refuge in your home or a designated safe area until it’s safe to go outside. This strategy is often used during emergencies such as pandemics, chemical spills, acts of violence, or severe weather events when leaving your home could put you at risk.

How to Prepare:

  • Create a Shelter-in-Place Kit: Stock up on essential supplies like non-perishable food, water, medications and first aid supplies. Make sure you have enough to last several days in case you’re unable to leave your home.
  • Prepare Your Home: Identify a safe room or area in your home where you can shelter during an emergency. This space should be away from windows and doors and easily accessible to all members of your household.
  • Stay Informed: Keep a battery-powered radio or portable device on hand to receive emergency alerts and updates. Stay tuned to local news and official channels for instructions on when it’s safe to leave your shelter.
  • Communicate Your Plan: Share your shelter-in-place plan with family members, neighbors and caregivers. Make sure everyone knows what to do and where to go in case of an emergency.
  • Practice Regularly: Conduct drills and practice sheltering in place with your household. Familiarize yourself with the procedures and ensure everyone knows what to do in different scenarios.

During Sheltering in Place:

  • Stay Indoors: Once you’re in your shelter area, stay put until authorities give the all-clear signal.
  • Seal Off the Area: Close and seal windows, doors and vents to prevent outside air from entering.
  • Monitor the Situation: Stay informed about the emergency situation and follow any instructions from local authorities.
  • Stay Calm: Keep yourself and your loved ones calm and reassured. Use distractions like games, books, or music to pass the time.

By being prepared, staying informed and practicing your plan, you can protect yourself and your family when disaster strikes.
